We offer flexible month-to-month lease options, so you can store with us for as short or as long as you need.

Is there a law against sleeping in a storage unit?

Yes. Living or sleeping in a storage unit is strictly illegal nationwide and in North Carolina. Storage units are not zoned or built for residential use. They lack essential safety features like proper ventilation, fire alarms, temperature control, and plumbing, making them dangerous for human habitation.

How long can I stay in my storage unit?

You may stay in your unit only for the time necessary to move items in or out, typically during the facility's posted access hours (e.g., 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM). You are not permitted to reside in the unit for any length of time.

Can a mattress stay in a storage unit?

Yes, a mattress is generally allowed. However, it is strongly recommended that you place it in a specialized mattress bag or cover before storage to protect it from dust, moisture, and potential pests.

Do cops check storage units?

Police generally require a valid search warrant to legally open and search a storage unit, just as they would for a home or office. A storage unit is considered private property, and law enforcement cannot simply demand access without a warrant or the tenant's consent.

Can I use a storage unit as an address?

No, you cannot use a storage unit as a legal residential address for mail, residency registration, or official documents. The facility address is a commercial property and cannot legally serve as your residence. Some facilities may allow business tenants to receive mail/packages as a service, but this is facility-dependent and is not a legal residential address.

How do I pay my storage bill?

You can pay your storage bill online using a debit or credit card. Additionally, you can discuss autopay options with your facility manager.

What documentation do I need to rent a unit?

A valid government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or state ID, is required.

What is not allowed to be stored in a storage unit?

Facilities prohibit storing items that pose a safety risk, are perishable, or are illegal. This includes:
  • Hazardous Materials: Gasoline, propane, kerosene, paint, chemicals, cleaners, fireworks, or explosives.
  • Perishables: Food, plants, or anything that could attract pests.
  • Living Things: People, pets, or any animals or plants.
  • Illegal Items: Stolen goods, illegal drugs, or controlled substances.
  • Firearms: Check your specific rental agreement, as many facilities prohibit storing loaded weapons or ammunition.

What does 24-hour access entail?

24-hour access means that you have unrestricted entry to a facility or service at any time of the day, allowing you to use or access it around the clock.


How much does a storage unit cost in NC?

Costs vary widely based on size, location, and features (like climate control).

How long until a storage unit is considered abandoned?

In North Carolina, the legal process for claiming a lien on a storage unit (which leads to the unit being sold or disposed of) typically begins when rent is unpaid for a period specified in the self-storage lien laws. For property other than vehicles, if rent and other charges remain unpaid for 15 days following the maturity of the obligation, the owner may begin enforcement procedures. The length of time before the contents are physically deemed "abandoned" and sold depends on the statutory notice periods and whether the tenant requests a hearing.

Do storage units have cameras inside the unit?

No. Storage facilities install security cameras on the exterior of the property, at gates, and in common areas (such as hallways) to monitor traffic and activity. Cameras are not placed inside individual, locked storage units to protect tenant privacy.
